CASEY’S plans for sports development in the municipality has received a top nod at a recent awards ceremony.
The City of Casey was awarded Best Sports Development Initiative at the 2011 Victorian Sport Awards for its Casey Sports Development Plan.
City of Casey Mayor Sam Aziz said this was the first time the council had won the award.
“This is a major award from vicsport, the peak industry body for sport in Victoria, which recognises the huge amount of work council undertakes within the sports industry, particularly at the grass roots level,” Cr Aziz said.
Casey’s Sports Development Plan focuses on developing partnerships across all levels of sport to facilitate new and enhanced opportunities for all residents.
It aims to help community sporting clubs be their best as well as providing and promoting programs to increase the level of physical activity in the local community.
In its first three years of delivery, there has been the establishment of two new community sporting clubs and the delivery of a comprehensive series of Sports Club Development Workshops to 775 volunteers, from 139 community sports clubs, across 29 different sporting codes.
Cr Aziz said the City of Casey had a strong sporting culture and was home to first class sporting facilities.
“This award is a terrific reflection of council’s commitment, not only to facility development but also to programs and services that ensure everyone in the community is encouraged and supported to participate in sport and physical activity,” he said.
