OWNERS of swimming pools and spas in the City of Casey are urged to meet new building regulations.
Penalties of more than $5000 apply to anyone who does not comply with building regulations and do not provide an appropriate safety barrier for their pool or spa.
City of Casey Manager Building Services Paul Usatov said residents had to meet swimming pool and spa barrier rules, which have changed since last year.
“Regulations apply to any swimming pool or spa containing a water depth of more than 30 cm and constructed on a property on which a house is situated,” Mr Usatov said. “A pool or spa greater than 30cm in depth requires a building permit and any barrier required to surround a pool or spa area also requires a building permit.”
Mr Usatov said relocatable pools and spas and inflatable children’s pools might also require a suitable barrier.
“As the new swimming pool and spa barrier rules are not retrospective for existing pools and spas, requirements differ slightly,” Mr Usatov said.
“Residents are encouraged to check council’s website for further information.”
Residents are reminded to ensure that barriers and gates are fitted and maintained to operate correctly, keep pool and spa pool gates closed, ensure young children cannot climb on any furniture or plants to gain access to the swimming pool or spa, have a supervision plan in place to maintain constant visual contact of children in the pool or spa area, and never leave children unattended near the pool.
