Brotherhood turns two

THERE was a big reason to celebrate at Big Brothers Big Sisters recently when the organisation reached the two-year mark for their site-based group mentoring program – The Big Brotherhood.
The boxing and fitness program takes place in a factory with a purpose-built gym, where vulnerable and disadvantaged young males, aged 12 to 17 years, meet with Big Brother mentor trainer Michael Karitsis.
In two years, the Hallam-based program has tripled the number of participants from 10 to 30.
The two-year milestone for The Big Brotherhood was marked by a presentation night, with each of the boys receiving a certificate and hoodies. Parents, friends, and supporters of the program including the Endeavour Hills Police Station joined the celebrations.
Big Brothers Big Sisters co-ordinator Nett Bailey said the program was a big success.
“We are grateful to mentors like Michael who volunteer their time to train the boys and build a strong relationship with them,” Ms Bailey said.
“We have seen the benefits of this program in the lives of the boys who have participated and we are excited about growing this program in other areas, including schools, and also setting up The Sisterhood, over time. These young people need someone who believes in them and who can be that extra support, and guide them through the tough times.”
Ms Bailey said a mother of two of the boys in the program credited it to teaching them how to control their anger and how to talk away when they are threatened or attacked.
Big Brothers Big Sisters program manager Rebecca Wolstenholmesaid there were more than 200 youngpeople waiting to access one-to-oneand group mentoring programs, but there were not enough staff to meetthe demands.
“We know our programs make adifference and we want to ensure that every young person who needs amentor, has a mentor,” Ms Wolstenholme said.
People interested in volunteering for the program, or financially supporting Big Brothers Big Sisters, are encouraged to contact the Hallam office on 8795 7999 or visit the website at www.bbbsosem. org.au.
