Cranny bowlers break even

By David Nagel
CRANBOURNE bowlers scored a fifty-fifty result for the club in the warm, blustery conditions of the Metro pennant competition last Saturday.
The top side played at home on a free-running 14 second green and got revenge against MCC (2) for their fifth-round defeat earlier in the season.
New recruit Brent Reiner had his rink firing and top scored with a 14-shot win. Lyn Quigg and Ray Travica also inspired their teams to a win and 16 valuable points.
The win places the Cranbourne side in the fourth spot on the Division One ladder and a chance to play in finals next month.
The second side was gobsmacked on arrival at Glen Waverley to find they were playing on a synthetic green after spending the prior week practising at home on grass.
The opposition quickly took advantage and had amassed a 28-shot lead by the afternoon break.
However the Cranbourne side rallied after a stirring speech by team captain Rob Reid and scored some big numbers when play resumed. Unfortunately the boys weren’t able overcome the deficit and went down by 12 shots at the end of play.
Luckily the side still remains in the top four of the Division Two ladder.
The third side played at home and had an emphatic win against Hampton Park. Once again Gary Farrington’s rink of “Evergreen” Ray Boskell, Stan Burnett and Rob DaCosta had a big win, this time by a whopping 35 shots. The result gives the boys the club’s best rink award and a free drink at the bar.
In a disappointing game, the Cranbourne fourth side was outplayed by a strong Edithvale (2) side and lost on all four rinks.
The Cranbourne fifth side played at Boronia and managed an 11-shot win in what turned into a very close game. Heroes of the side were Alan Skurrie’s rink of Cyril Arlove, Laurie Meagher and Trevor Elsey who top scored with an 11-shot win.
Despite a good win by Olive Stanley’s rink of Ian Crimmins, Keith Bowler, and John Bartley, the Cranbourne sixth side was defeated by Clayton (5) at home.
