Cranbourne bowlers survive the heat

CRANBOURNE bowlers nearly achieved the perfect result for their club on Saturday with only one of the six sides losing in round 15 of the Metro Pennant Competition.
The stifling heat made it difficult for players to maintain concentration throughout the game, but wins by both the first and second sides mean they keep their spots in the four with three games to play before finals.
The top side played at home on a slick 16 second green against a pumped-up Mt Waverley side. The hot, gusty conditions and slippery green made things very difficult for the bowlers, which resulted in some very loose heads throughout the game. However the Cranny players were able to get closer than their opponents and went into the break with a slim lead.
After the break the rinks of Brent Reiner and Ron Lyfield jumped their opposition, picking up numbers and extending their leads. Ray Travica’s team of Corbin Barrenger, Chubby Hodgson and Barry Thomas clawed their way into the lead over the final few ends while Lyn Quigg’s rink couldn’t overcome their opponents. At the end of the day the Cranbourne side finished the game with three rinks up and 16 points.
The second side played away on a synthetic green again, this time against Vermont South. Bobby Kent’s rink of “Big Mike” Noa, Hans Worsteling and John “Plank” Horwood was the only winning team in the side, but with enough shots up to cover the deficit on the other three rinks. The 12-point win keeps them in the top four of the Division Two ladder.
The third side played at home against Mt Waverley (3) and had a close win, with two of the four rinks up. Tony Whalley’s rink of Vic Butera, Jesus Carretero and Lyn Whalley were the big winners in the side with an 11-shot win. The win leaves the side only one point outside the four, in fifth spot behind Narre Warren.
In another disappointing game for the Cranbourne fourth side, Steve Boyd’s rink was the only wining rink with the side losing overall by 34 shots to Mentone (3).
The Cranbourne fifth side played at Dandenong City and managed a draw in a very close game. Alan Skurrie’s rink of Cyril Arlove, Laurie Meagher and Dick St Ruth once again did well, top scoring with a 12-shot win.
