A TEENAGE hip hop dancer from Hampton Park will be showing off his moves to thousands of spectators later this year.
Brandon Harrison, 14, went through an intensive auditioning process in front of So You Think You Can Dance choreographer and 2012 Department of Education and Early Childhood Development Dance Director Kelley Abbey and was chosen to be a Principal Dance cast member for the Victorian State School Spectacular this year.
The show will be at Hisense Arena in Melbourne on 8 September and features some of the best dancers, singers and musicians from across the state.
It is one of the largest recurring performances in Australia. It is a professionally staged production performed to an audience of over 10,000 people.
Brandon, a Narre Warren South P-12 college student and dancer at Cathy-Lea Dance Works, is one of six male dancers to be chose in a feature group of 40 performers.
He said he hoped some people had a negative opinion of male dancers and hoped to change their perception.
“I think it’s sad that some guys my age judge male dancers,” Brandon said.
“I think they need to open their eyes and realise that you can accomplish great things through dance and performance.”
His mother Julia Lucey said Brandon had put in a lot of effort to entertain others.
“He is currently dancing 5 days a week,” she said.
“Either in his own classes at Cathy-Lea Dance, music, drama works or rehearsing for the Spectacular at Jason Coleman’s Ministry of Dance in North Melbourne.”
Brandon said he loved dancing because it allowed him to express himself and
he looked forward to taking the stage in front of for thousands of people.
