MAYFIELD Ward councillor Amanda Stapledon was elected as the mayor of the City of Casey at last night’s election.
A special council meeting was held last night to elect the new mayor and Cr Stapledon was the only one to put her name up for the top job.
Former Mayor Sam Aziz was chosen as the deputy mayor.
Cr Stapledon said one of the reasons she wanted to take on the job was to show sole carers that they can serve in public life and in their community.
“Whilst my personal position is only known to some, being a sole carer is not something I have chosen to announce publically as I wish to perform my role without concessions,” she said.
“As sole provider for a young man who requires expensive medical treatment, aids, equipment, support and respite I know very well the challenges of the carer and how things need to change to allow them greater freedom to live their lives the same way other parents do and it is my resolve within my lifetime to ensure things do improve significantly. “I hope to send a message to the people out there that devote their time to others that we need to break down the barriers to allow all carers to live full and active lives so they can choose to serve in public life and in their community.”
Fellow ward councillor Gary Rowe supported Cr Stapledon.
“She has done a fantastic job for the past four years and I can’t think of anyone more deserving than herself,” he said.
Balla Balla Ward councillor Geoff Ablett put Cr Stapledon’s name up for the position.
Cr Aziz also showed his support.
“My vote is for Cr Amanda Stapledon,” he said.
“She is an outstanding human being who has delivered in spades for her community,” he said.
