ONE local woman is making a difference, but not by word of mouth – it’s by taste of food.
Owner of Ooh La La Cupcakes Caroline Towers is not only the creator of cakes, but also of ‘Cupcakes for a Cause’ – an initiative designed to help disadvantaged students overseas.
After a family trip to Fiji in 2012, the Narre Warren South resident was exposed to the lifestyle of those less fortunate than her.
Amazed at the vast difference in schooling between her own children and the Fijian students, Ms Towers was determined to change this.
“It was apparent to me how different it really was, and how different it was to my daughter’s school,” she said.
As a result, the business owner decided she would use her baking talents to help create a change.
Since July 2012, Cupcakes for Cause has been helping to make a difference to the lives of children at Sigatoka District School in the Fiji Islands.
“Every order placed with Ooh La La Cupcakes helps to change the lives of others,” Ms Towers said.
“A percentage of each order goes directly towards charity.
“In order to ensure the funds were used effectively, Ms Towers identified certain areas that could use the money.
“The plan is to raise some initial funds for some very specific areas of need,” she said.
Future funds raised will go towards a new library, artwork supplies, and stationery and to simply assist the school by providing extra finances.
Ms Towers said a number of fund-raising events would occur throughout April, with the largest fund-raiser happening at the iBare Showroom in Hallam.
The iBare giftware showroom will display items such as handbags and jewellery, with a percentage of all profits raised going directly towards the Sigatoka District School.
There will also be raffles held on the night.
The event will take place on 12 April at the iBare Showroom in Hallam from 7pm until 9pm.
All money raised will be taken by Ms Towers and donated straight to the school in May.
