A COLLABORATION between the Australian Red Cross and a Melbourne fashion school will prove that one man’s trash really is another one’s treasure.
The Australian Red Cross and the Whitehouse Institute of Design are teaming up to produce the Cross Conscious fashion event later this month.
Third year student of the Whitehouse Institute of Design Aimee Meade is part of group which is anticipating the launch of its show.
As part of the curriculum for the class bachelor of design, the students had to create a fashion charity event for the Australian Red Cross.
As part of the project, the group had to recreate clothes which had previously been donated to the not for profit organisation.
Aimee said they pitched various ideas to the organisation, which then had to choose the ones it liked.
“We all had to pitch an idea to the Red Cross – which then picked a few.”
Planning for the event began in March and Aimee said the advantages of this project are twofold.
“It’s a really cool idea,” she said.
“It is contributing to not only our assessment, but the community as well.”
Aimee explained that everyone involved had to take on different roles, and she was given the role of catering officer.
“I had to go to Melbourne based catering companies and see if they would like to be involved,” she said.
The fashion show, which will take place on Wednesday 12 June at the Whitehouse Institute of Design, is attended by various celebrities, including Lauren Phillips who will be the master of ceremonies.
The event includes not only a fashion parade of the designs put together by students, but also an art show and live entertainment.
Aimee said she can’t wait to see the final result.
“I am looking forward to the installations of all the art,” she said.
“There are so many different mediums.”
