VCE bright sparks

By LIA SPENCER

FIVE students from the City of Casey are among those honoured for the 2013 Premier’s VCE Awards.
There were 286 students who were honoured for performing at the highest levels in VCE in 2012, including Gheerthana Jeyaruban from Hampton Park Secondary College, Alina Derkach from Kambrya College, Eunice Ghita from Maranatha Christian School, Britt Westaway from Nossal High School and Justin Mathews from Gleneagles Secondary College.
Justin, who was DUX of his graduating year, received a perfect score of 50/50.
Justin said the award was unexpected and that he believed it was not just due to his efforts but to his family and friends and the support he received from his teachers. He is currently studying Dentistry at Latrobe Bendigo.
Premier Denis Napthine congratulated all the students for their achievements.
“Completing VCE is no small feat, but doing so with a top score is a tremendous achievement,” Dr Napthine said.
“I wish them all the very best on the next exciting stage of their life journey.”
A total of 310 awards were presented in three categories: Study Awards, Top Three International Student Awards, and Top All Round High Achiever Awards for students who received a study score of 46 or above in at least five subjects.
Dr Napthine said the breadth of talent on display at the Awards was good news for the state’s future.
“If these students are Victoria’s best and brightest, then we are in very safe hands, indeed,” Dr Napthine said.
