IN OCTOBER, Narre Warren’s David Dortmans will ready himself for the 200 kilometre Ride to Conquer Cancer, but at the back of his mind will be his courageous niece Bethany.
He is running a trivia night to raise money for the challenge which will go towards the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre.
It’s a particularly meaningful event for David and his family, although he acknowledges the reach of cancer and how it affects everyone in some way.
“Cancer is something that has touched all of our lives in some measure,” he said.
“It’s my goal to put a stop to that and the ride is how I am doing my part. That’s why I am so passionate about raising funds. Any donation that you can give is greatly appreciated.”
The physical side of the ride, which is on 26 and 27 October, will be a challenge for David although he has been training in preparation. When the pain gets too much, he knows he can draw on the strength from his niece.
“As I prepare physically for the 200 kilometre two-day Ride to Conquer Cancer, I am inspired by all those who are supporting me in so many ways to raise money for this great cause,” he said.
“For me it is a personal challenge, I will get great inspiration from the courageous battle of my niece Bethany.
“She was diagnosed with non-hodgkins lymphoma in November 2011 and undertook intensive treatments including multiple rounds of chemotherapy, radiation and blood stem cell replacement therapy.
“Bethany lost her battle recently but her legacy lives on.”
David describes Bethany as a courageous, gracious, selfless, outgoing, determined and above all else inspirational in her outlook and the challenges she faced.
“Me and all family and friends draw great strength from Bethany as we honour her memory as we prepare and train for this important event to raise funds for Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre,” he said.
Family friend Kate McCrory is also cutting her hair for the event and will contribute the funds raised to David’s fund-raising efforts. She will also donate her locks to the Pantene Beautiful Lengths campaign.
“I have a family friend that I have known for quite some years who is doing the 200 kilometre Ride to Conquer Cancer,” Kate said.
“He has to raise $2500, and I thought I have long hair, let’s cut it off.
“It will be a massive change and easier with a 17-month-old son.”
On Saturday 5 October, David is running a trivia night at the Max Pawsey Reserve in Fountain Drive Narre Warren. Tickets are $10 per person, games start at 7.30pm. Email David for tickets dadorty63@gmail.com
