Mark their words

By LACHLAN MOORHEAD

BOOKMARKS can be easily misplaced but there’s a new design on the horizon that will be worth taking care of.
Painting with Parkinson’s launched a new series of bookmarks this week, specially designed by artists from the group.
The art therapy class run by Berwick’s own Anne Atkin, who suffers from Parkinson’s Disease, released the bookmarks on Wednesday with the help of Narre Warren South MP Judith Graley and Shadow Minister for Disability Services Danielle Green.
Ms Atkin said the bookmarks were inspired by one of the group’s new members.
“We had a new member, Nicole Watling, and she was making really beautiful cards, then she decided to make bookmarks,” she said.
“I invited Judith to come down to one of our Painting with Parkinson’s sessions and Nicole was there with her bookmarks. Judith suggested that we use our artwork as the design for them.”
Ms Atkin said she couldn’t wait to launch the bookmarks with the group’s work on them.
“It’s going to be lovely and we’re really looking forward to them. I’m really thrilled at what Judith’s done,” she said.
“I usually use scraps of paper for my bookmarks – these are a lot nicer!”
Ms Graley thanked Ms Atkin and the Painting with Parkinson’s group for helping to create her bookmarks and said their designs were beautiful.
“I had been searching for a new design for my bookmarks for a while and after spending just a few hours with this extraordinary group I knew I had my artists,” she said.
“Their obvious joy from the freedom provided by this class was infectious and I had no doubt they would produce a range of outstanding designs.
“I would love for as many people as possible to enjoy the artistry of our local painters.”
