WHEN it comes to seizing opportunity, most people would be well off following the example of Casey Comets soccer dynamo Alex Gummer.
The 21-year-old, originally from Warragul, went from a disappointing end to her 2013 winter soccer season – following her Casey Comets Women’s Premier League (WPL) team missing the play-offs in September – to earning her place on a W-League roster and kicking a goal on debut.
“You don’t really expect to get a goal on your debut – it has been an awesome last couple of months – everything has just happened so fast and it’s been crazy,” Gummer said.
“Ideally I’d just like to keep my spot and keep improving for the team and improving as the league goes on and hopefully get some solid results and work our way up the table.”
Adelaide United’s W-League team faces Melbourne Victory at home this week before the all-important homecoming on 21 December, with a large group of Gummer fans set to cast aside their Victorian blues and don the United red and support their rising star.
More on Gummer’s W-League ascension can be found in this week’s Pakenham-Berwick Gazette or the Berwick and Cranbourne News.
