Pear shaped for adventure pair

By LACHLAN MOORHEAD

WHEN Ray Johnson and his brother Travis signed up for the Kathmandu Adventure Series at Lysterfield Lake on Saturday, they knew they might hit a few hiccups – but they didn’t think they’d lose each other during the course.
“It went a bit pear-shaped, we lost each other!” Ray, from Narre Warren, said.
“In a team challenge like this you have to do everything as a pair and you have to stay within 100 metres of each other.
“We were going OK at the start and then we lost each other for an hour and so I just kept going on my own.
“There are a lot of checkpoints to find and things can definitely go wrong in the rain.
“The lesson is to always work together.”
Despite the mishap, the Johnson brothers got through their third Kathmandu Adventure Series relatively unscathed.
The 30-plus kilometre race comprises mountain biking, running and kayaking and is specifically designed for teams of two.
“Events like this get the adrenaline pumping,” Ray said.
“It was also handy this year because Lysterfield is down the road for me. I train down there all the time.”
While he admits the pair did better last year, Ray said he and Travis battled admirably through the soggy Melbourne weather.
“When we did the first one two years ago we had to get used to it and we’ve progressively got into it more and more,” he said.
“It’s an opportunity to challenge yourself and to step out of your comfort zone.
“I do a lot of these triathlons on my own so it’s good to do it with my brother, it comes with a big sense of achievement.”
The 2013 Kathmandu Adventure Series consists of a number of events across several locations, with the option of entering one, several or even the entire series.
