Spring Square safety push

By LACHLAN MOORHEAD

A GROUP of like-minded Hallam residents are calling on council to improve pedestrian safety around Spring Square.
A 110-signature petition calling for the installation of traffic calming measures at Princes Domain Drive in Hallam was presented to the City of Casey last Wednesday on 20 November by Narre Warren North MP Luke Donnellan.
Judith Frampton, one of the residents who signed the petition, said Princes Domain Drive was perilous with cars coming from all directions.
“There’s no pedestrian crossing and no signals on Princes Doman Drive,” she said.
“It’s got a lot worse since Coles opened up there, and it stays open until late.”
Ms Frampton said they were left vulnerable without a crossing or traffic lights.
Mr Donnellan, who was first contacted by concerned resident Michael Jones, said it was up to the council to decide what type of traffic calming measure it should introduce in Princes Domain Drive, but suggested a chicane would be most appropriate.
“Speed humps don’t necessarily work in every instance, and it may be safer to put in a chicane or pedestrian crossing, but that is up to Casey,” Mr Donnellan said.
Mr Donnellan agreed safety on local roads was of paramount importance for all residents, from the elderly to young children.
Council advised that they are unable to comment until the petition has been tabled at council.
