Wetlands issued with algae alert

BLUE-green algae, which can be harmful to animals and people, has been detected at a wetlands in Berwick.
Melbourne Water has advised people to avoid contact with the water from the wetland located at Greaves Road, Berwick Springs, following the detection of the algae this week.
South-East Region manager of waterways Greg Bain said there were several forms of blue-green algae and the species currently present in the Greaves Road wetland could be harmful to animals or humans.
“People should avoid the water and make sure it does not come into contact with their skin or eyes,” he said.
“Pet owners are advised to take similar precautions and keep their animals from entering the water or from drinking it.”
Mr Bain said people should also avoid eating fish from the lake during the outbreak and for three weeks after the bloom has cleared.
