MURRAY Jones was universally loved and respected by the police force he served, almost as much as the sons he raised and the family he supported.
Now the people so greatly influenced by Murray while he lived are ensuring his legacy will live on, with a fund-raiser organised in his honour.
The Murray Jones Golf Day will take place tomorrow at Churchill Park Golf Club in Endeavour Hills, over a year since the former police officer passed from cancer at 57 years of age.
All proceeds from the day will be donated to the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre.
Kane Jones – along with his brothers Mark, Michael and Kristan – has been planning the event for some time and hopes to make it an annual tribute, with 130 people already confirmed to play on Friday.
The Jones brothers had always thought about having a golf day for their dad after his passing, but it was Kane’s idea to make the inaugural event a fund-raiser.
“There were a few thousand people at dad’s funeral. I’ve never met anyone who didn’t like him,” Kane said.
“He was so easy to get along with, and he never said a bad word about anyone.”
Kane’s partner Jo, who has also been instrumental in organising the event, said Murray left an indelible mark on his family, friends and work mates.
“Murray was a cop and when he passed he had one of the biggest funerals, held in the police academy in Glen Waverley,” she said.
“Kane’s been doing a lot of the organising single-handedly and the boys have been helping out when they can.”
The family has raised roughly $6000 for the cause and hope to reach the $10,000 target.
