BATTLING her best mate proved the added bonus to push Georgia Cummings to national championship glory.
Cummings, 13, from Endeavour Hills, blitzed her competitors to win two gold medals at the Australian Junior Track Nationals Championships held in Sydney over the weekend.
With the burning intent to win the individual pursuit guiding her, Cummings set the benchmark to earn her way to the gold medal race against her friend and training partner Alana Field.
Cummings blazed away to finish the race in 2.45.56 and win her first Australian junior championship of the meet.
“Yeah, I was pretty happy with the wins,” Cummings said.
“Probably winning the individual pursuit was my favourite win as that was the main one I was going for, but I don’t even know how I got the medal for the points race.
“I was just so happy – it didn’t even feel like I won it.”
Her second victory was a little more unexpected as she found herself at the top of the table in the junior-15 women’s points race – finishing the laps with 15 points against her name to take the gold medal.
“It was a bit of a weird race as I don’t really remember sprinting for many of the points – but because it was a 30-lap race, with five sprints and I sat on the front for something like 20 out of the 30 laps.
“We finished and I thought that was a good race – but then I heard the commentator and he said, “And Georgia Cummings wins the points race’ and I was looking up at the board for the points and it was a crazy win.”
Cummings also won a silver medal in the scratch race and a bronze medal in the sprint to cap off the amazing achievement filled weekend.
Cummings wanted to thank her coach Hilton Clarke, her sponsor Apollo Bicycles and her friends and family for all their support.
