DESPITE being a teenage girl, Corinne Carlyon was determined to cut off her hair.
The hair, which the 14-year-old from Berwick cut off this week, will then be donated to Pantene to be used as a wig for cancer patients, while the money Corinne raises will go straight to the Cancer Council.
Corinne’s mum Kerry has helped her daughter every step of the way, encouraging her daughter to donate the money to Cancer Council through her involvement with Relay For Life.
But Kerry admits that she was hesitant at first, and made sure Corinne gave it some thought before committing to the initiative.
“I told Corinne that it sounded like a great idea but recommended that she just sit on it for a bit,” Kerry said.
“So she sat on it for 24 hours, then 48 hours but in the end she wanted to go ahead with the notion. She set up her donation website and everything went on from there.”
Kerry said she was extremely proud of her daughter’s commitment to the cause and commended her selflessness.
“She’s had long hair all of her life but she’s at that age where she’s starting to understand the world around her, and the hardship and tragedy that’s out there,” Kerry said.
“She wants to make a difference but as a 14-year-old you’re limited with what you can do.
“I’m very proud of her, but for Christmas she got one of those curling irons and then I realised she wouldn’t be using that too much!”
Corinne said she had set herself a minimum fundraising target of $500 and hoped she would reach it, once the donations were tallied.
“Mum has really supported me and helped out a bit,” Corinne said.
“She said that if I wanted to do something like this, then I should go for it.”
