WITH the sun sparkling across the Cranbourne green, many eager golfers turned out last month for a swing at glory.
Such was the scene at the Rotary Club of Endeavour Hills 28th Annual Charity Golf Day, held at the Cranbourne Golf Club and sponsored by Bendigo Bank Dandenong.
Chairman of the Golf Day Committee Peter Verey said the event had been a marquee occasion since it started almost 30 years ago.
He said the 2014 event was played in “perfect conditions” and continued a successful and popular tradition.
“86 players teed off for an array of golfing prizes, with one hole providing plenty of fun as golfers tested their skill and backed themselves to hit the ball on the green or inside the centre circle,” Mr Verey said.
“At dinner afterwards, the spinning wheel proved a huge success with plenty of money changing hands to try and claim a complimentary game of golf at Cranbourne Golf Club and other local courses.
“These were kindly donated by the respective clubs.”
In excess of $10,000 was raised at this year’s event, to help support the Endeavour Hills Rotary Club’s recently established Disaster Aid Australia project, created to help the people from the Philippines rebuild their homes after the devastation of Typhoon Haiyan in November last year.
“Money will also be donated to support local youth groups in the area,” Mr Verey said.
The Disaster Aid ethos is to “rebuild homes and lives” in the Philippines through supplying home repair kits to, and working with, locals. Disaster Aid Response Team members (DARTs), assigned by Endeavour Hills Rotary, have already helped rebuild 500 homes by the end of last year and the groups have set a lofty objective of re-building 2000 in total.
