BETTER in blue is Narre Warren South softballer Montana Chavasse.
Chavasse was awarded a School Sport Victoria Sporting Blue for her softball achievements – ranking her as one of only 48 student-athletes to receive the prestigious honour this year.
At the awards ceremony, held at the MCG, Chavasse was presented her Blue by Casey TigerSharks Olympian Matson Lawson and athlete Alex Rowe.
“It was pretty good – I guess there are better athletes – there’s a girl who got a black belt when she was eight – but I felt pretty good going up there as I’ve played all these years and to get a big award for it was great.”
Chavasse’s success came in the School Sport Victoria under 12 softball team at the national championships Sydney, NSW, from 3-8 November last year.
Although she walked away a little bruised with a black eye to show from the championships as a catcher/shortstop – Chavasse enjoyed the experience and being able to represent her state.
“They were good – I played pretty well and I caught, but I got a black eye,” Chavasse said.
“We didn’t win many games, but I had a few nice hits and a few great catches but particular games that stand out to me.”
It caps off her successful time in primary school sports – as she’s moved onwards to Alkira Secondary College from Fleetwood Primary School.
Her softball development squad duties with Softball Victoria are also on the horizon, with Chavasse set to head off and defend the MVP award she won at last year’s development tournament.
Summer softball season comes to an end this weekend for Chavasse and her Berwick Braves team-mates as the local grand finals are held this Sunday, with the Sporting Blue winner representing both the under 13 and under 17 teams.
