Draw… seconds from disaster

By JARROD POTTER

A LAST second goal scraped a draw for Dandenong City in its NPL1 soccer clash on Monday night against FC Bulleen Lions.
The Endeavour Hills-based Dandenong City found itself up against it early as the Lions roared into life and kicked the first goal through Joey Katebian in the 37th minute, who had a number of early chances before slotting the Lions’ only goal for the night as he got on the end of a perfect pass to slot it behind City keeper Dennys Martin.
City scrambled to make its own opportunities through speedsters Damien Miskulin, Dario Matkovic and Keegan Ziada, but the equaliser would come off the boot of experienced defender Steven Topalovic.
Making the switch from NPL side Dandenong Thunder in the off-season, Topalovic justified Dandenong City’s selectors as he created chances up forward when he was switched into the front half in the dying stages.
In the 92nd minute he found a hole in the defence and struck a laidback, calm goal past Bulleen’s Fraser Maclaren to equal the scores.
WOMEN’S PREMIER LEAGUE AND STATE LEAGUES
Casey Comets Women were burnt by former star striker Alex Gummer and her Booroondara Eagles – beating the Comets 0-3 on ANZAC Day.
In Women’s State League 1, Berwick City was knocked off 0-2 by Brighton SC.
In the Men’s State Leagues, Casey Comets continued its stellar start with a 2-1 win over Diamond Valley, while in State League 1 South East, Berwick City (5-0) and Doveton SC (3-0) comfortably accounted for Seaford United and Mooroolbark Senior SC respectively.
