Double up for Cavaliers’ victory

By JARROD POTTER

PINK was the colour of victory for the Casey Cavaliers men with a double-header triumph.
With all Casey teams wearing pink for BNCA Pink Lady Day, it was the Cavaliers men who starred with a 80-51 win over Western Port on Saturday night.
With captain Dean Johnson absent, Matt Witherden (25 points, 10 rebounds) and Matt Pebole (17 points, nine rebounds) stood tall under the basket to reel in the win in front of a sellout crowd at Cranbourne Basketball Stadium.
The Cavaliers backed it up impressively the next afternoon as they smashed a 97-78 win over Mornington.
A 33-point final term put the final nail the Breakers’ coffin as Witherden (28 points, nine rebounds) and Pebole (27 points, 13 rebounds) backed up their Saturday successes.
The Cavaliers remain in second and face Keysborough on Saturday night in a battle for the top of the ladder.
The weekend wasn’t as prominent for the Cavaliers women with a pair of losses against Chelsea and Mornington.
Casey fought back against Chelsea, erasing a 10-point deficit to take a late lead before Chelsea stormed home to steal a 64-58 win.
Lara Pauline (17 points, five rebounds) and Alex Keates (11 points, five rebounds) stood tall while Jess Szalek (eight points, eight rebounds) made strong showing in close.
Cherise Jacotine (eight points, seven rebounds) excelled in the league’s hardest task – trying to curtail Jasmine Lovejoy (13 points, 11 rebounds).
Casey fell to Mornington 50-72 on Sunday.
A happy Mother’s Day stats-line went to a Cavalier mum Szalek (12 points, seven rebounds).
The Cavaliers drop to sixth and will face Keysborough on Sunday at 2pm.
The Cavaliers’ Ballin’ For Breast Cancer fundraiser on Saturday raised $6411.75 through the Casey basketball community for the Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA).
