A CRANBOURNE man was involved in a police chase which lasted more than an hour after he and a woman allegedly stole a car from Barry Bourke in Berwick.
On Monday 26 May police believe a 23-year-old man from Cranbourne and a 25-year-old woman from Kilsyth stole a 2014 Orange Holden Maloo after they asked to take it for a test drive.
Gavin Palmer from Barry Bourke said the pair were in the car yard for about 10 minutes and drove off before the salesman could get into the car.
Police said the car was spotted in Berwick on Wednesday 28 May, and following this there was a car chase which lasted for about an hour and 15 minutes.
Detective Senior Constable Rebecca Maydom from Casey Crime Investigation Unit said the chase started about 3.30pm on Wednesday and the drivers reached very high speeds in unsafe conditions.
“They were driving quite dangerously and there was intermittent rain, so the roads were damp in the first place,” she said.
Sen Const Madyden said there was also a lot of traffic on the road given the time of day.
She said the car chase began in Narre Warren and continued through Belgrave, Emerald, Menzies Creek, Upwey, Upper Ferntree fully and Wantirna South.
It finished in Knox where the car was dumped at the Knox Shopping Centre after which the pair were said to have fled on foot.
The police Air Wing was also called out to assist.
The man and woman were charged with theft of the Maloo as well as offences related to their driving.
