DEADEYE Peter Dye made sure Doveton Eagles stayed in the premiership hunt with a nine-point win over Caulfield.
Putting to bed their woeful Round 1 capitulation against the Bears, the Eagles mounted a four-quarter attack at Power Reserve but wayward kicking could have cost the Eagles severely with 14 behinds almost giving the game to Caulfield.
Dye drilled his five to ensure the Power Reserve boys sang the song for the fourth time this season and with a true logjam of a ladder starting to emerge – third to ninth separated by one-and-a-half games – the season is still alive for the ninth seed Eagles.
Enayte Samadi, Matt O’Callaghan and Hayden Martin all impressed.
Their next clash is against wooden spoon aspirants Moorabbin away on Saturday.
SFL – DIVISION 3
Hallam claimed its biggest scalp of the season, knocking off cross-town rival Endeavour Hills at home. The Falcons kept the Hawks scoreless in the first term and held a slender one-point lead at the final break before Hallam spread its wings. The Hawks drilled four goals unanswered – with Matt Neve and Kyle Kime snagging three goals apiece in the win. Linden Fredericks excelled as did Bryce Neve. For the visitors, Byron Hoe notched his fourth best afield in a row while Aaron Brooks kicked two goals.
Hallam now heads to Mount Waverley while Endeavour Hills hosts Black Rock.
VAFA – DIVISION 3
BEN SPENCER controlled the forward line as the X-men forward maestro drilled four goals to guide St Francis Xavier to an 11-point win over Aquinas.
After a stalemate first term – locked up at eight points apiece – St Francis Xavier started kicking away as Spencer and Dwayne Scott (2 goals) started shaking up the scoreboard.
With first use off Sam Burns, Joel Lenders and Leigh Andrews, the X-men were able to hold off the gallantly determined Aquinas outfit to claim the 10.8 (68) to 8.9 (57) victory.
St Francis Xavier next host Richmond Central with an aim to improve its fifth-place standing in VAFA’s Division 3 competition.
