CASEY’s school crossing supervisors have urged motorists to ensure children are safe on the roads now that school has resumed and the weather is wet and foggy.
Drivers have been urged to slow down, take care when in school zones and ensure they are adhering to the appropriate speed limit.
City of Casey mayor Geoff Ablett said the council operated one of the largest school crossing programs in Victoria with about 170 school crossing zones across the municipality.
“We’ve been experiencing some wet and foggy mornings recently, so people need to alter their regular habits and drive safely based on the current road and weather conditions,” he said.
“Drivers should remember to turn on their headlights, remain at a safe distance and stay under the speed limit when the weather is poor.
“When approaching school zones and school crossings, motorists must ensure they slow down, are alert and travel at a safe speed to ensure the safety of children as they get in and out of cars and cross the road.”
Cr Ablett also encouraged parents to walk with their children to school, or drive to a nearby location and walk part of the way.
“Walking to school is a great way for parents to spend some quality time with their kids, build in regular exercise for themselves and help decrease the risk of dangerous traffic build ups around school zones,” he said.
