Half-million dollar haul

By LACHLAN MOORHEAD

POLICE are still investigating a spate of raids last month in which properties on large land allotments in Hallam, Lysterfield and Narre Warren North were all targeted.
It is understood that almost half a million dollars worth of property was stolen in the thefts, including ride-on lawnmowers, jewellery, war medals, TVs and lawnmowers.
Casey CIU Detective Sergeant Chris Lewis said some of the burglaries appeared to be linked and warned residents from neighbouring Casey suburbs to be on alert.
“Definitely some of them were connected,” he said.
“There were over 100 burglaries reported in Casey over a month.
“There were a few at those large properties initially, but it looks like they’ve (offenders) moved into more residential properties in the top end of Endeavour Hills.”
Sgt Lewis said the offenders would have used large vehicles or trailers to carry out the raids.
“The things they’re taking, like ride-on mowers, you’d need a ute or trailer to take that stuff away,” he said.
“Even nowadays with a big 50-inch TV, we would imagine they’re using that type of big vehicle.
“Jewellery is also the flavour of the month at the moment because it’s readily disposable.
“Some of the stuff is sold to second hand dealers – they hold onto it for seven days and then melt it down.”
