Centenary events aim to unite

By LACHLAN MOORHEAD

CASEY councillor Rosalie Crestani has echoed the sentiment of fellow councillor Geoff Ablett in proposing several new Anzac Day activities for the municipality.
The council resolved on Tuesday night to prepare a report by November looking into Cr Crestani’s new suggestions for Anzac Day activities, which include preparing a commemorative wall of honour, the introduction of a commemorative Anzac book and the implementation of an Anzac creative writing competition.
“As an extension of the mayor’s efforts in the preceding item of Anzac names, I rise to bring to the council this evening the motion before you carrying with it a high regard for our Anzacs, our soldiers, nurses and medical assistants who have participated and sacrificed a great deal for our very existence,” Cr Crestani said on Tuesday night.
“Anzac Day and Remembrance Day draw the community together under a common banner and vision.”
The council’s report into the viability of Cr Crestani’s Anzac suggestions is expected to include estimated costs and any other potential suggestions put forward by the council.
“After consultation with the community over the past two years, there is a strong basis for this Notice of Motion in as much as the need for further preparations to be undertaken for the 100 year centennial next year,” Cr Crestani said.
“But also the anniversary that will continue to follow including the battle successes and undertakings of the Australia (and New Zealand).”
