Hair up there

By LACHLAN MOORHEAD

MICHAEL Piastrino knows a thing or two about hair.
That’s why the hairdresser, a Berwick native, has again been selected to represent Schwarzkopf and his salon, Ibiza Hair, at the 2014 Mercedes Benz Fashion Festival in Brisbane this Sunday.
“We get anywhere from 20 to 30 models and I have to work with the designers,” Michael said this week, ahead of the festival.
“This year we’re going for that beach wave look.
“We need to make sure everything is perfect. Our reputation’s on the line, but I’ve got a really good team behind me.
“You need a lot of trust, and it’s a lot of stress. But we have many practices beforehand, we get a lot of models into our salon and we’ll do some work on them and see how that goes.
“So when we go on the day, we can just smash it.”
Mr Piastrino’s high-profile stint in Brisbane this week comes on the back of an already jam-packed year for the passionate hairdresser.
Ibiza Hair, Mr Piastrino’s salon in Albert Park, won Salon of the Year in the International Hair Society’s (IHS) Victorian competitions back in April, while Michael himself won Hairdresser of the Year.
And in its short six-year existence, Ibiza Hair has already won the favour of several celebrities, from Anthony Callea to Scotty Cam, the host of The Block.
“We just love what we do every day,” Mr Piastrino said.
With impending plans to open up an Ibiza Hair premises in Berwick, Mr Piastrino is hoping the salon’s success is a hint of things to come.
“It will happen in High Street, Berwick, hopefully later this year or early next year,” Mr Piastrino said.
