Speed humps slowed down

THE City of Casey has agreed to put the installation of speed humps in a busy Narre Warren South area on hold after local residents called on the council to reconsider the proposition.
The council resolved last Tuesday to shelve the installation of speed humps in the Berwick Springs estate for the time being in the wake of a 34-signature petition being presented to the City of Casey earlier this month.
Resident Michael Ball, who helped organise the petition, called on the council to look at other safety options due to fears that speed humps would negatively affect the local amenity.
“The majority of residents bought properties in this area because of the lake and tree lined streets and did not want speed humps to detract from area.
“Also noted was noise concerns and position outside of people’s properties,” he said.
He said the petition requested a “more proactive council push” into investigating the viability of increased police enforcement in the area and the installation of mobile speed cameras.
Springfield Ward councillor Louise Berkelmans said the residents’ concerns were valid and hoped to have an update on the issue from council officers in the next few weeks.
“Safety is the number one issue but it’s a very picturesque tree line and if we can have an alternative solution I think that’d be brilliant,” she said.
The council resolved to write to police seeking advice about what other traffic calming measures can be introduced to the area while a meeting with residents to discuss future strategies is also being organised.
