Mums in motion

By LACHLAN MOORHEAD

IT’S an opportunity for new mums to have fun and a bonus if they get fitter in the process.
This is how personal trainer Julie Cox from Berwick views her Mums in Motion fitness group – a chance for new mums who may find themselves struggling physically and emotionally to find their confidence again.
Julie, herself a mum, set up the group when she was living interstate four years ago before taking the idea to Berwick when she moved back to Victoria.
The fitness sessions are now held several times a week at Arch Brown Reserve in Berwick, as well elsewhere across Melbourne, with betweem 15 to 20 mums attending each time.
“The whole concept is a fitness group but it’s primarily trying to target new mums in the area and we get a lot of young mums on board,” Julie said.
“We have relations with post natal depression groups – they refer new mums to us.
“It’s a safe, fun environment for mums to work out in.
“They lose the baby weight and can start new friendships.
“It’s a mental thing for mums and a bonus if they lose weight along the way.”
But while it may be a chance for the mums to let their hair down, Julie makes no excuses for also putting them through their physical paces.
A standard Mums in Motion session will include a bout of boxing, circuit classes and cardio work, while there is also a strong focus on nutrition and diet.
“The program’s become huge, especially in the last 12 months.
“We do sessions in Berwick but we also do a four-week challenge, and we’ve got up to 50 to 60 ladies getting involved over the back-to-back months,” Julie said.
“It’s convenient for them to bring their kids along, especially the Berwick group, they can bring their babies while they train.
“There’s play equipment right next to where we train, so the kids look forward to coming up as much as they do.”
