Sunshine reigns on Cougars’ parade

By RUSSELL BENNETT

THE Berwick City Cougars have slipped to sixth on the Victorian Summer League Baseball Division 2 ladder after an 11-1 home loss at the hands of Sunshine on Saturday.
The result came a week after going down 9-4 to Malvern, flying in the face of a strong start to the season in which the Cougars won their first two games.
But the only scoreboard pressure the Berwick side could mount against Sunshine came from Alex Clark (a single), while the visitors had a day out at the plate.
Jaret Chatwood, Adam Irons and Lane Koski scored doubles, with one each to Chad Galloway, Shannon Hornstra, Rory Meddick, Lewis Weldon and Daniel Wilkie.
The weekend’s game featured the two leading run-scorers to this stage of the Division 2 season – Chatwood and Clark.
Despite consecutive heavy defeats, Berwick still has a massive up-side, given the excitement surrounding its young core of players.
The future definitely looks bright for the boys from Cyril Molyneux Reserve.
In other games on Saturday, Berwick City’s reserves went down to Sunshine in a tight tussle 4-2, while the Cougars’ thirds turned the tables with a 13-8 win.
The Casey side’s fourths team also enjoyed a dominant victory over St Kilda, 13-3.
The Cougars seniors will be on the road this Saturday when they take on the bottom of the table’s winless St Kilda from 3.30pm.
