TWO-time Narre Warren premiership coach and former St Kilda star Aussie Jones is set to make reigning EDFL West premiers Cora Lynn a whole lot stronger.
It’s a frightening thought for fans of rival clubs in the newly re-formed 15-team competition, but in addition to retaining practically its entire senior list from season 2014, Cora Lynn has announced a coaching coup with Jones signing on as its director of coaching.
Jones is a great mate of Cobras senior coach Travis Marsham and gun midfielder Ricky Clark. All three were at Narre Warren in one of the club’s most successful periods, while Jones has also worked with Marsham at TAC Cup side Gippsland Power, Gembrook Cockatoo in the Yarra Valley Mountain District League and – most recently – the Bendigo Gold in the VFL.
“Where we wanted to make an improvement was around the development of the coaches and the structure of that, and that’s when we approached Aussie,” Marsham told the News.
“He’d finished at Bendigo and was speaking to other clubs, but we wanted to offer him a role where he could just come in and take on the role of director of coaching – an umbrella view over it all. He’s going to help guide and mentor the coaches and make sure the message is consistent.”
Marsham said part of Jones’ role would be to take charge of the Cobras’ development group – elite young players who have the potential to go on and play at a higher level.
The Cobras have got a vacancy for their under-18s coaching position with Ray Payne coaching the under-16s and Scott Mather heading up the reserves group. Applications close on Sunday. For more information, call Travis Marsham on 0405 132 452.
