Bad run for Cougars

By RUSSELL BENNETT

THE Berwick City Cougars are currently sixth on the Victorian Summer League Baseball Division 2 ladder after a rough week in which they lost both their games.
The Cougars’ Round 6 game was a mid-week fixture held at the Melbourne Ballpark in Altona on Wednesday last week.
The Casey side put seven runs on the board but wasn’t able to stop the bottom-of-the-table St Kilda going down 9-7.
Cain Hillier finished with a double for the Cougars while Lachie Beasley, Andrew Gibbens, Adam McKenzie, Jack Speirs and Mark Surtees all had one run apiece.
Berwick was looking to bounce back quickly in its Round 7 match-up with Werribee on Sunday afternoon but went down 3-0.
With three wins and four losses from their seven games so far, the Cougars will look to come out breathing fire this Sunday when they travel to Merri Park to take on Fitzroy from 3.30pm.
The two sides are currently in a three-way tie for fifth on the standings.
Berwick City then has another mid-week clash in Round 9 when it travels to Springvale to take on the Lions – the other team vying for fifth on the ladder – on Wednesday night from 6pm.
The game between the Cougars and the Lions promises to be a battle of the hitters, with some of Division 2’s elite – such as Berwick’s Hillier, Beasley and Alex Clark and Springvale’s Scott Wearne – in action.
