Noticed for tobacco breaches

CASEY Council has initiated action against two local businesses caught selling cigarettes to minors.
Council’s health officers have been targeting tobacco retailers across Casey that are in breach of the Victorian Tobacco Act.
In addition to the two businesses issued with infringements, a third business has been given an official warning from council.
Infringement penalties for the sale of tobacco to minors range from $590 for a person and $8856 for a company.
“Council’s Environmental Health Officers led a range of activities including regular visits and inspections to tobacco retailers, licensed premises and other venues across Casey to ensure compliance with the Act, and play a supportive role in preventing tobacco-related illness across the community,” Casey mayor Mick Morland said.
“Council will continue to educate tobacco retailers throughout Casey so they are aware of their obligations in regards to the sale of tobacco products under the Act.”
Tobacco retailers who are unsure of their obligations can contact council’s Environmental Health Unit on 9705 5200, or the Department of Health Tobacco Information Line on 1300 136 775.
