HARMFUL blue-green algae was detected in the Berwick Springs Estate this week.
Melbourne Water on Wednesday issued a warning advising people to avoid contact with the Beaumont Waters wetlands in Berwick Springs and the Greaves Road retarding basin after the algae was found.
Waterways Manager South-east region Greg Bain said there were several forms of blue-green algae and the species found in Berwick could be harmful to animals and humans.
“People should avoid contact with the water and make sure that it does not come into contact with their skin or eyes,” he said.
“Pet owners are advised to take similar precautions and keep their animals from entering the water or from drinking it.”
Mr Bain also said people should avoid eating fish from the retarding basin during the outbreak, and for at least three weeks after the algae had been cleared.
“We will be sampling the water regularly and keeping a close watch on the problem,” he said.
“Signs have been erected around the lake to warn people of the potential hazards.”
Blue-green algae occurs naturally in waterways, typically in summer, and erupts into blooms during hot weather, periods of drought, or where there is an accumulation of nutrients in waterways or water bodies.
