Drivers urged to watch out for school kids

CASEY Council is warning drivers to stay alert on the roads as children across the municpality return to school this month.
Casey Mayor Mick Morland this week urged the community to drive safely around schools and park legally at all times.
“Most schools have now started term one, so it is essential that motorists are cautious when driving in school zones,” he said.
“Drivers should ensure they slow down in designated school zones, make sure they park safely and pay attention to parking signs, ensuring they adhere to parking restrictions at all times.
“Speed limits for school zones are designed to improve road safety outside schools while taking into account high traffic volumes, peak school pedestrian hours and school holidays.”
Cr Morland said the City of Casey had one of the largest school crossing programs in the state, with 157 school crossings throughout the municipality, watched by up to 220 crossing supervisors.
“I urge children and their parents to use the pedestrian or school crossings, as it is the best way to cross the road safely,” he said.
“Drivers are reminded to stop and remain stationary when a school crossing supervisor is on the road.”
