BERWICK MONTUNA GOLF
MARK Clydesdale crafted an impressive one-under-par 68 in the first round of the Berwick Montuna club championships on Saturday to signal that he is in the mood to add to the two open titles he has already won at the club.
Clydesdale’s round left him with a handy five-shot cushion over existing champion and fellow left-hander Dean Baker who shot a four-over 73.
Clydesdale turned in one-under 33 after birdies on the eighth and ninth holes, but gave one stroke back on Berwick Montuna’s signature 10th hole. However, birdies on the par-five 12th and par-four 15th, together with a bogey on the tough 14th hole, meant Clydesdale came home in par figures to sign for this 68.
The chasing pack behind Baker is headed by four players, Daniel Birchall, Chris Free, Bradley McGill and multiple club champion Aaron Bowbanks, all on 75. Father-son duo Colin and Mitch Jamieson share next best placing on 76 with Grant Roberts.
In B Grade, 14-handicapper Sean Campbell had a day out, returning an impressive 76 off the stick to hold a one-shot advantage over Michael Nicholas. Les Reedman is a further three strokes back after shooting a first-round 80.
Early leader in C Grade is Grant Shelton, whose 83 puts him four shots ahead of Mick Richardson.
