A mighty second wind

By JARROD POTTER

SPURRED back to life after an insipid first half, Casey Cavaliers rallied against Coburg to take their second win of the BIG V Division 2 Women’s season.
The basketball bounced Coburg’s way in the first half as the Cavaliers sprayed their shots – hitting 13 per cent in the first term – and failed to attack the basket at either end.
It left a 20-point deficit approaching half-time and with a thumping on the cards, the Cavaliers sprung into action after the break.
Whatever spray coach Tim Parker gave his charges at half-time must have been awe-inspiring as the Cavs’ ladies launched into a full-force comeback.
The Cavaliers held Coburg to 23 points while smashing down 43 of their own on the back of inspired efforts from Sammie Johnson (23 points, 11 rebounds), Amy Mcfarlane (12 points) and Natalie Dowdy (10 points, 7 rebounds).
McFarlane did not hit the bench, spending a full 40 minutes on court as she rallied the side back into the match.
With two wins and a whopping 189 per cent to start the year in style, Casey is out of the blocks with a bang in season 2015 ahead of its clash on Sunday afternoon against Chelsea at Patterson River Stadium.
The lights didn’t shine as favourably on the Cavaliers’ men after humbling defeats across the weekend against Geelong and Chelsea. Sustaining a 67-78 loss to the Supercats, the Cavaliers were unable to change course on Sunday, downed by the Gulls as well to make it two defeats for the double-header.
Casey will host Blackburn on Sunday from 5pm.
