CASEY mayor Mick Morland will announce the official start of works on the new Casey Cultural Precinct this Monday.
Cr Morland will turn the first sod at the reserve on the corner of Magid Drive and Patrick Northeast Drive to celebrate the commencement of the facility’s construction, while the precinct’s official name and logo will also be publicly unveiled.
“I’ve been around since the early days of this project when it was just an idea, and it is exciting to see it being brought to life,” Cr Morland said.
Carolyn Briggs, from the Boon Wurrung Foundation, will join council to perform a traditional smoking ceremony before the turning of the sod.
“I encourage community members to join in the celebration for this exciting moment in Casey’s history,” Cr Morland said.
“This $125 million precinct is a regionally significant project that will provide residents from south-east Melbourne, and visitors with an unprecedented mix of arts, culture and entertainment when it opens in 2017.”
The first stage of works on the precinct includes the relocation of services including gas, drainage, power and sewerage, as well as the removal and relocation of barbecues, shelter and seating.
The Casey ARC car park will also be extended as part of the preliminary works.
The sod turn ceremony will take place from 11.30am to 12.30pm on Monday 30 March. For more information, visit www.caseyculturalprecinct.com.au.
