EMPHATICALLY brushing aside Bayswater, Endeavour Hills soared in its debut Victorian Women’s Football League (VWFL) clash.
A six-goal opening term signalled the Falcons’ intent early as the likes of Sarah and Georgia Punton, Rebecca Sadler stood up and dominated early.
The torrential rain that beset the south-east heavily affected the second half, but by then Endeavour Hills was well and truly on top to push away to a 12.17 (89) to 1.1 (7) triumph in its first ever VWFL Division 3 match.
Coach Mark Haughton was thrilled for his charges.
“The Divvy three girls absolutely smashed it in the first half then it rained in the second,” Haughton said.
“The game-style was brilliant and the girls performed fantastically.
“I’m just so happy for the girls – they went out there and played in excellent spirit, but when the siren went it was game on.
“We also had four first timers that played really well.”
Supporting the opposition, almost as well as their own team-mates, the Falcons players wore pink ribbons in support of the Bayswater – rallying around an injured player who recently involved in a car accident – and raised nearly $500 to help out.
Sitting on top of the ladder – with a whopping 1271.43 per cent – the Falcons will return home next weekend following the Anzac Day holiday break to face Seaford in Endeavour Hills’ first home match at Barry Powell Reserve.
“I couldn’t be more excited – the girls are keen – it’s like its Christmas tomorrow,” Haughton said.
“Div 3 weren’t able to wear the home colours as Bayswater has very similar colours to us, so we’ll also get to be in the club colours for the first time.
“For all of the hard work that everyone has put in – players, coaches and the committee – it will be a very special game and it is a great atmosphere.”
The East Division side didn’t fare as well as the senior brigade, downed by 73 points as AFL Gippsland was too strong on home soil.
With a brand new side- featuring 14 players who have never put on the boots before – Liz Whitfield – a former St John’s champion midfielder – and playing-coach Meredith Denvir have taken the new players under their wings and started showing the way.
A solitary goal to Erin Louise Hart was the sole contribution for the Falcons in their second grade season opener, but will get a fortnight’s break, with Anzac Day weekend plus next weekend’s bye, before facing Rosebud in its first home match on Sunday 10 May.
