Road to car crime cut

By LACHLAN MOORHEAD

CASEY car thieves have been put on notice with police launching extra covert patrols in the region.
Last year there were 2189 reported cases of thefts from cars in Casey, almost 500 more than the year before.
And the RACV released figures this month revealing that Casey was ranked third behind Greater Geelong and Brimbank councils for car theft claims in 2014.
The Casey Response and Tasking team (CRAT) – which includes officers from the Narre Warren, Cranbourne, and Endeavour Hills stations – is working hard to curb these numbers.
“We’re hoping to speak to the individuals who are driving those numbers,” Senior Sergeant Phil Atkins said.
“We’re out there. You might not see us, but we’ll be seeing you.
“We intend to catch up with you sooner than you think.”
Sen Sgt Atkins said that in majority of the thefts there was no sign of forced entry because victims were leaving their car unlocked or with the windows open.
“While we’re doing our best to combat the issue, there are a few things that members of the public can do to decrease the likelihood of falling victim to these crimes,” Sen Sgt Atkins said.
“Lock your car at all times, even when parking at home in the driveway or garage.
“Don’t leave valuable items such as wallets and electronic devices in full view of passers-by, and take them with you if possible.
“Park in well-lit areas when possible and if you see anyone acting suspiciously call Crime Stoppers.”
