Back in the hunt

By JARROD POTTER

BERWICK City shot the lights out against a depleted Noble Park SC to stay on top of the ladder and hunt for re-promotion. After a difficult couple of years – getting demoted back to Women’s State League 2 South East – Berwick City women are back on the rise following a 10-goal demolition at home on Sunday.
Six goals in the first half put the match well beyond question as Kesley Minton relished her State League 2 chances with four goals as she tore apart the Noble Park defence.
Jess Brooks returned from a four-week layoff injury to excel up forward. She slotted a great goal with her first touch after being subbed on in the first half.
The State 2 match was abandoned 20 minutes into the second half after a Noble Park player suffered a serious knee injury.
Coach Dave Mackie was pleased with his side’s outstanding performance with Berwick City.
“Kelsey Minton returned to the State-2 line up and promptly scored four very good goals with Kate Wilson adding a brace and Sarah McGlone also got her first very much anticipated goal for the season,” Dave Mackie said.
“Our two centre backs Shannon Stroud and Emily Rizkallah rounded out the rest of the scoring with two very well taken goals.”
Berwick City sits two points clear in WSL2SE and travel to Monash University on Sunday afternoon.
The club’s WSL4S women won 3-0 over Bayside Argonauts to round out the success at Jack Thomas Reserve. Berwick City wants to wish Pat Kurasik a speedy recovery and look forward to her return.
WOMEN’S PREMIER LEAGUE AND MEN’S LEAGUES
Casey Comets men and women had mixed results with the men drawing 0-0 against Warragul United to gain a crucial point to move above the relegation zone in State League 1 South East, while the women are dead last in WPL with a 1-3 loss to Heidelberg United on Friday night compounding the problem.
In NPL1, Dandenong City conceded a solitary goal against St Albans Saints and that would be the final outcome as City maintains sixth spot in the East competition ahead of its clash against Richmond SC.
Despite a goal from Ricardo Gonzales, Berwick City men were unable to hold back Heatherton United, downed 1-2 in the State League 2 men’s while Doveton SC went ahead through Jozsef Ferencz (2goals) and Phoenix Lawton to knock over Old Melburnians 3-2.
