Burritos on the house

By GEORGIA WESTGARTH

A VICTORIAN record was achieved in the name of free food at Westfield Fountain Gate last week.
Hundreds of people lined up to receive a free burrito or burrito bowl and get a taste of the new Latin-inspired local eat out.
Guzman y Gomez (GYG) Mexican restaurant officially opened on Thursday 18 June and officially hit a record in Victoria giving away 5482 free burritos.
The free food opening day is a signature of the Mexican fast food restaurant which has been delivering traditional Mexican flavours in Australia since 2006.
Anyone who stopped by between 11am and 8pm could pick their fillings, take a seat and take in the Mexican entertainment, free nachos, colouring corner for the kids and moustache face painting.
Founder of GYG, Steven Marks, had hoped the opening would beat the national record of 6361 burritos given away in one day, but has since had to settle for the Victorian record.
“We brought our A-Game yesterday and we were able to make one fresh made to order burrito every six seconds,” Mr Marks said.
A long term supporter of Mision Mexico in Tapachula, Mexico, GYG collected gold coin donations on the day with 100 per cent of the proceeds going to the children’s refuge which helps abused and neglected street kids get back on their feet.
