LEAVING a lasting sporting legacy at Hillcrest Christian College has motivated Erinn Bonser to give it her all.
This wasn’t just a personal legacy – through earning school records or winning state championships – but to also inspire those coming through to take on all the opportunities that only a life in sport can offer.
Erinn’s ethos is as simple as her passion for sport – just do it.
The Year-12 student gives her all for the benefit of everyone else at the school – to help other students grow as people as well as athletes.
For these reasons, the Taylor sports captain was awarded a Pierre de Coubertin Award last month – one of only 100 students across the state to receive the honour.
Bonser was nominated by a teacher at her school for her perpetual persistence in improving her own sporting ability and helping generate the sporting interest of other students as well.
“I didn’t really think that I was going to get it, then when I did I thought it was pretty cool,” Bonser said.
“I organise things because I’m a sport captain, so I have to organise sport days, and I’ll do that to the best of my ability to make sure they have a good time and involve themselves and make their passion deeper.”
The champion netball defender, who plays in the Casey District Netball Association, has an unshakeable, core belief – if you love it, don’t let anyone stop you achieving your goals or engaging with your favourite pursuits.
“If it’s your passion just go for it – if that’s what you want to do with your life, it doesn’t matter what anyone else says,” Bonser said.
“I like to involve – not only my year level – but build everyone else up.
“It doesn’t matter what your friends say or your teachers say, you’re getting points, having fun and it is fun for everyone.”
Hillcrest teacher Grant Armstrong said Bonser’s achievements on and off the sporting arena made her a sensational choice for the award.
“Erinn has been an outstanding contributor to the school sporting program during her time at the college – she has taken part in an exhaustive number of sports showing excellence in athletics, cross country, netball, basketball and European handball.
“She is the holder of numerous school records in high jump, long jump, triple jump, shot put and discus.
“Her philosophy in life is to ‘step up to life,’ always striving to be her best and overcoming adversity and Erinn is selfless and has proven to be an exceptional role model to her peers.”
Bonser wanted to thank her teachers Grant Armstrong and Ms Cardwell for their support.
