THEY’VE outgrown their shed and are in need of some more walls to keep their community spirit alive.
The Akoonah Park Men’s Shed has been hammering away at projects for the wider community since 2012 and with about six new members signing up each month the social group is bursting at the seams.
President of the Berwick Men’s Shed Lindsay Harding said the group started out with 25 keen woodworkers and now boats 160 active members.
“We finished building the second shed which houses the blacksmith materials just 15 months ago and now we need another,” Mr Harding said.
With the hope of introducing a wider range of social and health activities for members, the Akoonah Men’s Shed is fund-raising to get the extension finished by October next year.
“We want to be able to offer more social activities such as yoga, carpet bowls and tai chi and focus on health more,” Mr Harding said.
Applying for grants at all levels of government, the growing group are experts in metal work, painting, carpentry, welding and even model trains with a dedicated hobby room.
“We teach computer lessons and our oldest member is 93 years old,” Mr Harding said.
The Men’s Shed is holding what they’re calling the ‘biggest garage sale in Casey’ on Saturday 24 October along with a monthly classic car and bike show to raise funds for a new shed.
