‘Green’ light upgrades a bright move

By GEORGIA WESTGARTH

CASEY’S street lights have been upgraded and are greener than ever before.
Delivering on its promise to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and cut street lighting costs, the Casey council has changed more than 9000 old lights.
Since November last year, thousands of mercury vapour streetlights have been upgraded to energy-efficient LEDs.
A proud mayor Mick Morland said the new lighting technology had resulted in significant savings.
“Analysis has showed council has saved $193,000 and reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 995 tonnes in the past six months alone,” Cr Morland said.
“These savings are impressive, however not all of the lights had been converted to LEDs at the time of the analysis so these savings are expected to increase further.”
The City of Casey expects to save about $700,000 a year on the street lighting upgrade.
The greener lights have been installed in more than 16 suburbs across Casey including Endeavour Hills and Tooradin.
