Portfolios for councillors mooted

By LACHLAN MOORHEAD

CASEY Councillors will be allocated portfolios of responsibility if a notice of motion put forward by the mayor is successful on Tuesday.
Casey Mayor Sam Aziz intends to raise the notice of motion at Tuesday’s council meeting, in which he will suggest that portfolios be allocated to each councillor for 2015-’16.
If the motion is carried, the portfolios will be effective immediately.
All councillors will be given multiple portfolios, with a draft list already completed.
Mick Morland would be given Economic Development and Promotion of a Culturally Diverse Community, Wayne Smith is to be given Community Strengthening and Arts and Popular Culture, Louise Berkelmans would be given Community Safety and Arts and Popular Culture, and Damien Rosario will be given Strategic Planning and Cities and the Built Environment.
Meanwhile Geoff Ablett would receive the Sports and Recreation Mental Health portfolio, the same as Rosalie Crestani, while Amanda Stapledon will receive Welfare of the Older Person and All Abilities and Disability Inclusion, Susan Serey would receive Youth Action Committee, Youth Policy, and Community Safety, and Gary Rowe would receive Economic Development and Efficiency and Effectiveness.
“This is for councillors to have individual areas to pursue to improve reporting,” he said.
“There’s a big difference from working as a generalist to working as a specialist.
“It will help accelerate actions to improve outcomes for residents.”
Cr Aziz said his fellow councillors were supportive of the move.
“It’s something we have spoken about but never put into action,” he said.
“ … I’ve decided to implement it in my mayoral term because it’s absolutely important we focus on areas of council responsibility.
“We need to focus on getting progress for residents on number of initiatives.”
