Terse verse on brother’s drug hell

BY THE age of 21, ‘Greg’ was using ice every day.
Earlier this month Star News reported on Greg (not his real name) – one of many Casey youths who have been addicted and tormented by the drug ice.
Greg, now 23, and his family, have spotted light at the end of the tunnel with the help of the Ice Meltdown Project, a rehabilitation group based in Drouin.
Greg’s family have been attending the group’s community meetings for the last six months or so.
Now Greg’s sister Elisha Dowsett has penned a poem about her brother’s battle with ice, which she plans to be part of a larger book she wants to write.
The poem on Greg’s drug hell is published for readers below.

The Ice Devil

Let me tell you a story …
About a boy I use to know …
As a teen so young and curious
his temptations start to grow
Happiness, hard work and fun
Lace his daily events
As behind the scenes the devil works
Planning to trap his innocence …
Shelter, love and showered in spoil
Thus being his reality
But little does this precious boy know
The hurt that was to be
No better judgement to be seen
When the devil picks his slave
In just one puff you’ll surrender
Doesn’t matter how strong or brave
Come closer, have a look, just one try
Tell me young boy what do you see?
To your family you are a blessing, a treasure
But another victim you are to me …
You think they’re your friends but they are not
I watch as you are convinced
I have the power to tear you up
To even test the way your mother thinks
You see my trick is I will invite you in
Welcome you with my addictive charm
Then as you get to know me
You’ll see only storms after the calm
I will dance with you, I will make you buzz
Together just you and me
Under my influence you’ll do as I say
As I lead you to a fake serenity
It begins with a rush of false thrill
Innocence upon our first date
I am laced with a lethal injection
Be careful now I will determine your fate
I am but a simple three letter word
Not a label matching my consequence
I steal, I ruin, I kill and inflict pain
Watch me as I test any audience!
I sit and count my victims
As so many surrender each day
I didn’t know I could trap them so easily
Closer to me they come as they push their families away
1, 2, 10 today,
more slaves to help me build
I’m designing a path of destruction
As so quickly I am dealt
I count the souls that I already own
And the ones that are almost mine
A little piece of me begins to worry
As defeating me is only a matter of time
One by one they stand together
My victims’ families know they are strong
There is no trapping a protective parent
Seeking answers, it won’t be long
Janice and the ice meltdown project
Who does she think she is?
She is teaming with these parents
And guiding my victims back to their families
One by one they are making a stand
Turning their tears into fight
I’m still here but slowly I panic
As my slaves are guided back to the light
I may leave my victims with long term effects
But not always do I kill
This sister standing here tonight
Has such determination and strong will
She will tell the victims and their families
That together they can defeat
Best weapon is their shared understanding
The ice devil as a team we’ll beat!
– Elisha Dowsett
