STUDENTS from Strathaird Primary will be kept in the shade next summer.
The State Government announced it would provide a $100,000 grant to the Narre Warren South school to install sun shades over its basketball courts.
The school currently has no existing shelter over the courts and lacks adequate shaded areas for the students to play in during the warmer months.
“At Strathaird Primary School we are focused on providing a safe environment for our students and the wider community,” Strathaird Primary School Principal Martin Shepherd said.
“Sun protection is an important priority for a safe environment and we encourage students to make ‘sun smart’ choices.
“We believe that the healthy choice for young people should also be the easy choice.
“To that end this shade facility will enable the school to promote a community wide approach for physical activity in a safe environment.”
Narre Warren South MP Judith Graley said she was “delighted” the funding had been secured for the school.
“Their basketball courts will now have all-weather protection, ensuring this space can be transformed into a multi-purpose outdoor area for their students,” she said.
“We all want to see our young people happy, healthy and active and that’s exactly what we will see at Strathaird Primary School.”
